Charlie Murphy

Charlie Murphy is a London based artist working with video, photography and live art. Her work is concerned with the psychological aspects of various forms of human contact and is suggestive of humourous observations and of real or imagined contact.

She has organised a series of “kiss-in” live art events for the Now Festival in Nottingham and the National Live Art Performance Platform in Glasgow among other venues and has exhibited at the Danielle Arnaud Gallery, London; Tuille House, Carlisle and The Photographer’s Gallery. Charlie Murphy has recently been awarded an Artist Bursary from Arts Admin to support the development of her work.

Charlie is currently working on a variety of projects including a major performance based work involving circus performers, a fully rigged sailing ship and sailors in Liverpool later this year.

As a follow up to Charlie's inclusion in New Forest Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Charlie mounted a kiss-in, LA KISS-INNALE, at Nouva Icona, CZ95, Giudecca 95, Venezia on 23 and 24 September 2005.

Charlie Murphy was in residence in August 2002 developing work for the exhibition,
The Art of Tickling Trout and Other Sensual Pleasures. The residency scheme was funded by the Regional Arts Lottery programme through Southern and South East Arts.

Tickling and stroking act as the core of Charlie's exploration into this relationship; ‘trout tickling’ an apparently sensuous and extraordinary technique for catching fish which involves a hypnotic predation by seducation; the ripplying muscle response by a horse to a fly landing or human stroking; the stroking activity between individuals and their animals.

Charlie collected a wide range of material from various sources including Trout Farms, Horse Fairs, The New Forest Show and domestic places.
