Emilia Telese

Brighton based artist Emilia Telese was born near Pompeii, Italy in 1973. She studied at the Fine Art Academy in Florence and moved to the UK in 1997. Emilia makes use of many different media in her work, such as printmaking, sound, digital video, live web-stream video, photography and performance. Because her work encompasses many different forms of art, Emilia refers to her work as "crossover" rather than "multimedia", which is a word often associated with digital art. For each of her pieces, Emilia makes use of the artform that she considers best at conveying her image.

In Spring 2003, Emilia exhibited a live, video and sound installation work at ArtSway called
Sleepwalking that explored issues of sensory, physical and reflected memory through reflected experience. The work reconstructed the journey Telese’s father made to the New Forest shortly before his death in September 2001, a journey from which she was absent. It is a daughter’s attempt to recreate the intimacy of lost memories, to share the unshared, to celebrate and remember her father’s life.

Her residency at ArtSway in September 2002 was part of the NavvyGate residency programme (funded by Arts Council England, South East, to support new work in new media). Lighthouse, Brighton, also supported the production of this work.
