Events Recent Events: Coach Trip to London: Anna Best's Studio & FRED (Independent Galleries in Vyner Street, London) Saturday 28 January 2006 FREE A group of ArtSway audience along with ArtSway staff joined artist Anna Best for a guided tour of Anna's studio in London's gasworks Studios. Anna also gave a talk about her recent and current work.The group had previously popped into Tate Britain to see Chris Offili's "The Upper Room'. The group then went on to Fred, a contemporary gallery in Vyner Street, to see their current exhibition and hear director Fred Mann speak about the gallery and London's commercial art world at a time that Vyner Street is fast becoming the East End's equivalent to Cork Street. AAAI Talk: Introduction to Contemporary Art - What's all the fuss about? Tuesdays 6 & 13 December 2005, 7pm - 9pm FREE Alistair gave an exciting talk at ArtSway on 13 December 2005 about his recent work, such as Nowhere Plains for the Radiator Festival for New technology. Do you remember the Werewolves? Alistair Gentry was in residency at ArtSway in 2002. His thrilling exhibition Werewolves was a light, sound and image based environment, exploring the range different emotional response we can have to a certain environments. AAAI Talk: Introduction to Contemporary Art - What's all the fuss about? Tuesdays 12 & 19 July 2005, 7pm - 9pm FREE If you’re curious about contemporary art, ArtSway’s relaxed and informal evening sessions are just what you might be looking for! These evenings aim to provide an introduction to, and discussion about, contemporary art. The sessions are structured in pairs where the first evening gives a background to contemporary art, while the next includes an artist discussing his or her work, life and career. New Forest Pavilion - Palazzo Zenobio, Venice 8 - 12 June 2005 Five AAAI artists are participating in the exhibition New Forest Pavilion, along with artists Richard Billingham, boredomresearch, John Gillett, Kypros Kyprianou & Simon Hollington. All of the exhibiting artists have been in residencies in ArtSway over the last five years. Simon Faithfull, one of the AAAI artists, will not be taking part in this exhibition. New Forest Pavilion is organised by ArtSway and will take place during the Vernissage (press and private view period) between 8 and 12 June 2005 at Palazzo Zenobio, as part of this year’s Venice Biennale. The presence of the New Forest Pavilion at this major international contemporary art event will give the nine artists and the gallery an opportunity to raise their international profile at a time when the attention of more than 20,000 journalists and art professionals will be focused on Venice. The Venice exhibition will include new media, video and performance works. See the images from the project here. AAAI Event: Trip to Tate Modern with ArtSway and artist Charlie Murphy The event, which took place on Sunday, 24th of April, was a great success. Participants, ArtSway staff & artist Charlie Murphy took a free bus to London and toured the Joseph Beuys exhibition at Tate Modern. Charlie gave her views of Beuys’ work, which followed a discussion about the influence he has had on many contemporary artists. Afterwards, we all had a drink on the rooftop of Charlie's London studio. Artist's Current News & Exhibitions Anna Best Anna is currently working on a Functionsuite commission. Funcition Suite is Functionsuite regards the hospital as a community. They provide a space for exchange between members of this community and artists. Functionsuite is an Artlink-initiated project in collaboration with the Lothian Arts Consortium. Simon Faithfull Simon is participating in EAST International, one of England's biggest annual exhibitions of contemporary art held in Norwich, showing work by artists from all over the world. He is giving a lecture on the private view night, titled Eye’s Blink, which is going to be more of a performance than a traditional lecture. Simon is also doing a residency and taking part in an exhibition in Helsinki as part of this year’s Helsinki Photography Festival. His residency is in September and the exhibition in October, both sponsored by the British Council. Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva Elpida is, among other things, returning from her 3 months residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, in Dublin. Alistair Gentry Alistair has recently been awarded a four -month fellowship/residency at the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed. He will be producing new work consisting video, installation and possibly some performance as well. The result will be exhibited in a solo show next spring/summer. Charlie Murphy Between1 and 5 February 2006 Charlie is taking part in the In Between Time Festival at the newly reopened Arnolfini in Bristol. The third In Between Time festival of Live Art and Intrigue will be hosted at Arnolfini and other venues around the city in February 2006. Widely acclaimed as one of the best festivals of its type, this will bring live art practitioners from around the world to Bristol. It's the perfect opportunity for people to experience and participate in live art and an ideal introduction for people new to what is an incredibly varied, thought-provoking and occasionally even shocking art form. Emilia Telese Emilia has recently accepted the post of A-N, Artists’ Networks Co-ordinator. This post aims to facilitate exchange, dialogue and collaboration amongst visual artists, whatever their practice and location. |
