RIGHT TO ROAM

17 September - 12 November 2000

Alana Jelinek was artist in residence at ArtSway in Februrary and March 1999.

Right to Roam is three works which together operate to explore ideas of landscape as a product of culture. One gallery is an encounter with familiar tourist figures - life-size paintings cut from MDF. In the other galleries, large paintings, installed on the floor, offer a birds eye view of individuals exploring the landscape. In
50°N 1°W, this is specifically the land around ArtSway. We are forced to edge around the canvases, much like a resticted field, constrained in our movement and ability to engage with the work. In this way Jelinek sets up highly charged encounters, raising notions of entitlement and privilege, territory and trespass, encouraging us to reconsider place and person.
