Interludes is an ongoing interconnected series of newly commissioned video work by Anne Bjerge Hansen. The show features 170 short works, which detail subtle, often humourous interventions and observations from different locations.

No camera action is used in
Interludes, instead sudden or subtle movements alter the otherwise still scenes. These vignettes play with the expectations of still life in relation to the moving image and often result in a shift of context through the placement of props within the picture plane. Objects found in everyday domestic situations are given new meanings and uses: a salt and pepper set becomes a primitive egg timer while a child’s toy is transformed into a spire on a metropolitan skyline.

The exhibition features existing Interludes in addition to an extensive body of new work, the bulk of which uses footage from the contrasting locations of Nottingham, Southend on Sea and the New Forest.

In Nottingham, Bjerge Hansen recorded imagery on sites ranging from one of the city’s trademark lace factories to ‘Rob’s Records’, a locally infamous vinyl bazaar. In the New Forest Bjerge Hansen used the idyllic rural setting around Rhinefield, the Ornamental Drive and The Old Station Tea Rooms in Holmesley. She also made work in the post office and the village hall in Sway.

Interludes is a Film & Video Umbrella touring exhibition produced and curated in association with Angel Row Gallery. It has been shown at Focal Point Gallery, Southend on Sea from 24 May to 5 July 2003

It is also Anne Bjerge Hansen’s first public project following the showing of her performance piece The Moving Bakery during the opening week of Baltic in July 2002.

The exhibition supported by the National Touring Programme of Arts Council England.
