Past FRANK BOWLING RA: THE WHITE PAINTINGS 13 May - 2 July 2006 Reception for the artist: Saturday 13 May 2006 1pm - 4pm Frank Bowling’s White Paintings represent a strand of working practice covering nearly 40 years of painting. Best known for his large-scale vibrant abstract canvases of intense combinations of colours, The White Paintings are an integral part of his oeuvre and can be considered a more restrained counterpoint to his more colourful works. Frank Bowling was born in British Guyana in 1936, and is considered one of the most influential artists to emerge from the post-war British art schools. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1962, alongside contemporaries such as David Hockney and Derek Boshier. Working in both New York and London since the mid-sixties he has a transatlantic reputation, recently recognized in England by his election as a Royal Academician in May 2005. Frank Bowling’s work is in many permanent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Jamaica; The Menil Foundation, Houston, Texas and Tate Gallery, London.
