Past Jamie Shovlin AGGREGATE 14 October - 26 November 2006 Artist Reception: Saturday 14 October 2pm - 4pm Jamie Shovlin’s work involves cataloguing and deciphering collections of seemingly inconsequential information. Aggregate brings together a series of new works commissioned by four UK venues including ArtSway. This new series of installations explores ways of analysing information relating to the natural world. Inspired by ArtSway’s rural location Shovlin has produced a series of frottages (a technique similar to brass rubbing) taken from jigsaws completed by his mother. These jigsaws usually depict utopian or idealised natural themes, with titles such as Rose Petal Gift Shoppe and Fantastic Waterworld. The process of rubbing eliminates the jigsaw’s original image and reveals its often-ignored structure. The subsequent frottages become an exploration of displaced acts of creation, involving the anonymous artist whose work is reproduced on the jigsaw, the artist’s mother, and finally Shovlin himself as he makes a frottage copy of his mother’s creation. The frottage remains as the sole evidence of the jigsaw’s construction; after a rubbing is made the jigsaws are collapsed to be re-made again. ![]() Aggregate is a touring exhibition in partnership with The City Gallery, Leicester; Talbot Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh and Hatton Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and includes four new commissions by the artist.
