Memory and Forgetting is an unique exhibition of works of art, which unravel some of the mysteries of the human memory. It is the result of an innovative meeting of scientific and artistic minds in which four established British artists were paired with four scientists – each specialising in different branches of memory research.

The artists Ashley McCormick, Shona Illingworth, Daniel Sturgis and Louise K Wilson were chosen to spend time with scientists Dr Anya Hurlbert, Dr Madelaine Eacott, Prof. Martin Conway and Dr Julian Hughes all working in the field of memory research. The aim was to collaborate on new ways of thinking and interpreting ideas of memory. Each pair focused on a specific area ranging from basic colour recognition through individual memory development, to memory loss in old age.

The exhibition includes a new sound installation by Shona Illingworth; sound and video work and printmaking by Ashley McCormick; a series of paintings and prints by Daniel Sturgis and video and printing by Louise K Wilson. Many elements in the exhibition involve audience participation for example Louise K Wilson’s Timeline, for which visitors are invited to contribute their earliest memory and Ashley McCormick’s table of prints, Ifs, ands or buts from which the visitor can take a print as a memento.

Memory and Forgetting is a project initiated by PEARLS (Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences Institute), Northern Print Studio and the Hatton Gallery, University of Newcastle, which began in March 2002. With funding from the Sci - Art Consortium four artists, the aims were to promote new understanding and dialogue about the brain, diseases of memory, and brain research and to create new visual arts work arising from collaboration between artists and scientists.

The exhibition is a Sci-art Touring Exhibition
