Out of Line

Drawings from the Arts Council Collection

Saturday 6 July - Sunday 1 September

Out of Line explores the fundamental nature of drawing and its ongoing relevance to visual arts today. The exhibition presents more than 60 drawings by 45 artists in the Arts Council Collection, bringing together a diverse range of works from the 1930s to the present day. Studies by distinguishd artist such as David Hockney, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Bridget Riley feature alongside works by contemporary artist such as Graham Gussin, Micheal Landy and Rachel Lowe.

Some works in
Out of Line are pages from artists' sketchbooks, such as Drawings from Rembrandt by Eduardo Paolozzi. Others adopt popular imagery from newspapers and advertising such as Richard Hamilton's Swinging London, a colour study based on a press photograph of Hamilton's dealer and Mick Jagger.

Younger artists, such as David Shrigley and Adam Dant, draw inspiration from comic strips, graffiti and children's book illustrations. Adam Dant's giant forest of signs is among the more recent acquistions to the Collection, as is Graham Gussin's computer generated 'porno-landscape' and Rachel Lowe's video, in which she draws frantically on the inside of a car window, attempting to outline the everchanging landscape. The exhibition is accompainied by a 60 page full colour catalogue with contributions by artists and hayward exhibition selector Suzanne Cotter.
