Everything Must Go

19 April - 25 May 2003

Images from the Exhibition

ArtSway is very pleased to welcome back Tony Sinden, who previously exhibited Deluge - An Audio Visual Space at ArtSway in 1997. Visitors to that exhibition will remember Sinden’s installation of sound, light and projected image which often challenge our perception of media in relation to architectural space.

Over the last few years he has continued to develop his solo practice that also coincides with an interest in revisiting earlier pieces that explored video, film and performance as a sculptural medium. In 2001 his work was included in the exhibition Live in Your Head, Whitechapel Art Gallery, a survey of British conceptual and time-based work in the 1970’s.

Everything Must Go, has developed out of the Durham Cathedral Residency and is co-curated by Judith Winter, Reg Vardy Gallery and Mark Segal, ArtSway. The concept of the exhibition came from a number of conversations between the artist and curators exploring the contemporary interest in conceptual and process-based practice.

Everything Must Go includes a series of new installations combined with a re-construction of the seminal video installation Behold Vertical Devices, 1974 (2002). Originally exhibited in Glasgow’s Third Eye Centre, this work consists of a line of nine small black and white video monitors placed side by side on a sloping 9’ builders’ plank. The exhibition also includes a body of new works created for Everything Must Go from a short video performance utilising a specific gallery space; installation involving two ladders and looped projection; a video installation that uses the flat surface of the floor, carpet tiles and the upward movement of an escalator to build a sculptural perspective.

Everything Must Go is not a retrospective, the title of the exhibition is taken from an advertisement recently observed by the artist reflecting his interest in exploring time in relation to issues that effect our perception of contemporary art.
