Book Binding Monday 6 September 2010, 10.30am - 3.30pm This workshop will show you how to make three distinct types of books:
1) The “Blizzard Book”, so named as it was invented by book artist and conservator Hedi Kyle during a blizzard, is essentially a folded or Origami book. This is an adaptable binding and is nice for little albums or memory books. It can be made with hard or soft covers.
2) The “Secret Belgian Binding”, whose discovery is attributed to Hedi Kyle and is an old German binding style. It's nice for a sketchbook as it lies flat when in use. It has hard covers and spine, all of which are constructed separately, then laced together and sewn to the pages.
3) The Medieval Style Leather Journal is a modern interpretation of a very popular sewing technique that goes back to the Middle Ages. Some book artists work in natural leather colours in keeping with a Medieval feel. The book can be made with soft wrap-around covers or with a stiffer leather according to taste. It can be closed in various ways.
No previous experience is necessary to make these books, although if you are good with your hands, you will find them reasonably straightforward. With Margaret Woods.
