Winner of ArtSway Open07 Congratulations to Laura Green, winner of the ArtSway Open07. Laura’s work ‘001 (Untitled:001) was the outright winner and a firm favourite with the judging panel. Next Exhibition Alex Frost BBQ 23 February - 6 April 2008 Saturday 23 February 2008 and Reception for the Artist: 3pm - 5pm. Alex Frost will discuss his residency, new works for ArtSway, and the ideas behind his work in ArtSway's galleries. With Exhibitions Curator Peter Bonnell. FREE, all welcome. Alex Frost’s show, BBQ, opens at ArtSway in only a couple of weeks. Alex creates large-scale, mosaic replicas of everyday commercial packaging, such as After Eight Mints, Ryvita Crackerbread and Earl Grey Tea and will use all three of ArtSway’s galleries as well as placing one work outside in the grounds of the pub next door. It looks like being an exciting show! A catalogue is being produced which will be available by the end of the show. Art in Context Talk: The Dialectics of Environmental Art Wednesday 5 March 2008, 7pm A lecture by Stephen Edge, Senior Lecturer at Bournemouth University, presented alongside the exhibition Alex Frost: BBQ. This lecture will examine the creative synergy that takes place between artists, engineers and contractors in the production of large-scale works of art. The Dialectics of Environmental Art, will focus on the work of legendary environmental artists Christo and Jeanne Claude. FREE, booking essential. Hannah Maybank 19 April - 15 June 2008 Hannah Maybank is working towards her April exhibition, opening on Saturday 19 April. Hannah will exhibit a number of new works closely connected to the residency she undertook at ArtSway in late 2007. For more details on Hannah’s exhibition, and a press release, please click here. In addition, images for press (High-Resolution format) are available here Gallery Talk: Hannah Maybank in conversation with Peter Bonnell Saturday 3 May 2008, 3pm Hannah Maybank will discuss with Peter Bonnell, ArtSway’s Curator, the themes and inspirations behind her new series of paintings and ink drawings. The talk will take place in ArtSway’s galleries, and will also touch upon her recent ArtSway residency, and future plans. FREE, booking essential. Art in Context (Mathematics) Gallery Talk: Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Section Wednesday 14 May, 2008 at 7pm A lecture at ArtSway with the intention of placing elements of Hannah Maybank’s paintings in a wider context. Professor Andrew Osbaldestin, Head of Mathematics Department, University of Portsmouth will discuss how ideas are often present in works of art either explicitly on the part of the artist or implicitly through reflections on the human condition or on the physical world. ArtSway Connect ArtSway Connect is ArtSway's artist development programme, which we plan to develop throughout 2008. Portfolio Day Friday 7 March Ten half-hour slots for artists from all backgrounds for critiques, portfolio reviews and career advice with Director Mark Segal and Exhibitions Curator Peter Bonnell. Workshops Our adult life drawing classes are currently full, but if demand is high enough we will be able to run a weekly course instead of currently fortnighly. If you wish to attend please telephone the gallery and we will add your name to our waiting list. Children’s After School club also continues on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons as well as Saturday mornings – please see our website for further details. There are currently places on our Thursday After School Art Club available. This class is for 5 – 7 year olds with artist Mia Khalaf. COST: £6 per workshop, or £35 payable each half-term. Origami for Beginners (Short course for adults) Four-week origami workshop in March aimed at beginners. Starting with boxes, stars, and 3D shapes, learn the basics of modular Origami (using more than one sheet of paper), how to read diagrams, and also a brief history of Origami. With local artist Rachel Meek. COST: £50 for the course (this includes all materials). Course dates: Tuesday's 4, 11, 18 and 25 March 2008, 7pm - 9pm

Rachel Larkins 'Christchurch Miscellany' ArtSway Craft Cabinets 23 February - 30 March 2008 Rachel is one of our ArtSway studio artists and throughout March she will be showing new work in ArtSway's gift shop cabinets, a collection of articulated works on the folklore of nearby Christchurch. Rachel constructs toys with a different edge. She focuses on the different ways in which domestic objects, such as toys, can be manipulated to take on other meanings. This showcase is accompanied by automata workshops for both adults and children on the following dates: Childrens Automata Workshop - 'Moveable Beasts' (8-11 year olds) 8 March, 1.30pm - 5pm COST: £10 per child Adults Weekend Automata Workshop Make your own articulated object. Saturday 15 March - 1.30pm - 5pm Sunday 16 March - 10am - 4pm COST: £25 for the weekend (includes all materials)
