Gallery Talk and Winner Announcement

User Group Meeting

Thursday February 7, 6:30pm

You are invited to the ArtSway User Group Meeting: Thursday February 7th at 6:30pm.

The ArtSway User Group meetings held twice a year offer you an opportunity to discuss ArtSway's programme and activities.  This is your opportunity as an artist, visitor, participant and/or parent, to contribute to the development of our work.  The ArtSway User Panel elects two people to the ArtSway Management Committee (our governing body) at this meeting.  If you would like to be included for nomination or want more information please email: mark.segal@artsway.org.uk

Following the ArtSway Open07 in February is Glasgow-based artist Alex Frost.  Alex finished his residency at ArtSway in October 2007 and has since been finishing work for his April show.

In addition, Alex will be giving an introductory talk to his work on the day of show opening.

Gallery Talk

Saturday 23 February, 2pm

Alex Frost will discuss his residency, new works for ArtSway, and the ideas behind his work in ArtSway's galleries.  With Exhibitions Curator Peter Bonnell. 

FREE, all welcome.

Art in Context Talk: The Dialectics of Environmental Art

Wednesday 5 March 2008, 7pm

A lecture by Stephen Edge, Senior Lecturer at Bournemouth University, presented alongside the exhibition Alex Frost: BBQ. 


This lecture will examine the creative synergy that takes places between artists, engineers and contracters in the production of large scale works of art, with focus on the works of legendary environmental artists Christo and Jeanne Claude.

Hannah Maybank

19 April - 15 June 2008

In contrast to Alex's sculptural show, painter Hannah Maybank presents large landscape-based paintings on a naturalistic theme.

Hannah was artist in residence at ArtSway in December 2007.  Her show will feature new pieces of work heavily influenced by the New Forest and the rural environs of Hampshire. Hannah's work is highly intricate, derived from detailed drawings yet completed in a modern colourist manner.

ArtSway Connect

ArtSway Connect is ArtSway's development programme, which we plan to develop throughout 2008.

Portfolio Day

Friday 7 March

Ten half-hour slots for artists from all backgrounds for critiques, portfolio reviews and career advice with Director Mark Segal and Exhibitions Curator Peter Bonnell.  Please contact the gallery to book your place.

Cost: £5 per person.


Workshops

Adult and children's workshops continue throughout February with life drawing classes on Thursday evenings with artist Gina Deardon as well as regular children's after school club activities throughout the week. 

February sees an additional adult workshop at the gallery.

Soft Pastel for Beginners

A four-week course aimed ay beginners, introducing basic techniques into suing soft pastels.  An opportunity to learn how to utilise different grounds and paper, drawing from both your personal photographs or from your sketchbook.  With artist Jane Puckering.

Cost: £50 for the course (this includes all materials and an easel). Course dates: Monday 4, 11, 25 February and 3 March 2008.

Photography Talk

Wednesday 6 February, 7pm - 9pm

The Role of Contemporary Photography in today's Institutions and Practices

In February ArtSway hosts a documentary photography talk with Guy Moreton from Southampton Solent University.  The talk will explore the the motivations that drive today's artists and photographers and look at the strategies and working practices they choose to communicate their work.

'Into the Light'

The Arts Institute at Bournemouth

ArtSway Curator Peter Bonnell with be giving a talk about his recent exhibition with Julie Marsh, 'Into the Light', at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth on Thursday 16 January. 

Peter will give a talk at 4pm followed by a Private View of the exhibition from 5:30pm.
