ArtSway Information - November 2007

ArtSway Information e-newsletters provide you with a regular update of what is happening at the gallery. Below is information about the next exhibitions, including the ArtSway Open07, talks and events; a range of winter workshops for both adults and children of all ages and news about our artists in residence.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Jack Lewis and I am the new Marketing and Press Officer here at ArtSway.  This is my first newsletter (hopefully of many!) and I look forward to meeting many of you in person in the gallery in the forthcoming months.

Nathaniel Mellors, The Time Surgeon, 2007

Current Exhibition

Nathaniel Mellors, The Time Surgeon

6 October - 25 November 2007
Reception for the Artist: Saturday 6 October 2007, 2pm - 5pm.  All welcome.

The month of November sees the complete transformation of ArtSway’s gallery space. Former artist in residence, Nathaniel Mellors, has made the gallery unrecognisable with the exciting film-installation, The Time Surgeon. Featuring themes of time travel and language, most of the film was actually shot on location in the New Forest and even features an appearance from Peter Bonnell, ArtSway’s very own Exhibitions and Education Curator!

November sees two exciting exhibition related talks at the gallery:

Gallery Talk: Work in Context (FILM)
Thursday 25 October 2007, 7pm

Jacqueline Furby, Film Lecturer at Southampton Solent University and editor of Screen Methods: Comparitive Readings in Film Studies (with Karen Randell) will discuss the way filmmakers have approached the subject of time and time travelling in cinema.

Exhibition-related Events
Gallery Talk: Saturday 10th November, 3pm
.
On Saturday November 10th at 3pm, freelance writer and critic, Sally O’Reilly, will be in conversation with the artist Nathaniel Mellors. They will discuss contemporary video art and throw some light on the complexity of The Time Surgeon installation and on some of its themes before it travels to France as part of the Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Lyon as ArtSway once again goes international.  Please come and join us for a glass of wine and have your questions answered by the artist himself.

Both talks are free but places are limited, so please call us on (01590) 682260 to book your place or email jack.lewis@artsway.org.uk

Nathaniel's installation has been gaining great reviews and features in a double-page spread in October's issue of Art Review.

New Exhibition
ArtSway Open Exhibition 2007

8th December 2007 - 9th February 2008.
Some tough choices will also have to be made this month as the works for the ArtSway Open Exhibition 2007 will be selected from the hundreds of submissions that the gallery receives. The quality of the submissions this year will make the decision even harder!  Open to all artists at every stage of their career, the Open aims to reflect current diversity in the art world of today. The overall winner will not be announced until January but you don’t have to wait that long to see the works as they will be on show from Saturday 8th December.

The winner of last year’s Open, Hampshire artist Joel Papps, successfully exhibited his show, ‘goodpastures’, at ArtSway this year to great acclaim. Joel is once again involved this year, this time on the selection panel along with ArtSway’s Director, Mark Segal, and Curator: Exhibitions and Education, Peter Bonnell. Maintaining ArtSway’s strong links with the Milton Keynes Gallery, Director Michael Stanley is also present on the panel.

Residency News

Current artist in residence, Alex Frost, is working hard towards his February 2008 show.  Following a successful solo exhibition at Milton Keynes Gallery this year (www.mk-g.org), Alex has been working since August on a number of new works to highlight his time spent at ArtSway.  Closely following on from his 'Adults' solo exhibition, his new pieces for ArtSway will again aim to highlight the current obsessions by society with material possessions and the world's dependance on digital aids in the everyday.

Alex's work uses hundreds of pieces of shattered ceramic tiles to create large-scale replications of everyday packages.  Look out for his exhibition opening February 2008.

Closely following Alex’s residency will be West Midlands’ artist, Hannah Maybank.  Hannah was successful in applying for ArtSway's open call for residency exhibitions and will begin her two-month residency at ArtSway at the end of October. All at ArtSway look forward to welcoming her.

ArtSway Associates Artist News
