Welcome to the October edition of ArtSway Information. This issue features our next exhibitions, Dinu Li: Ancestral Nation and Laura Green's: Knowing and Not Knowing. There are a couple of talks coming up sich as the Art in Context and Laura talking about her work, so book NOW! Also in this month are future exhibitions, an artist film screening, Figuring Landscape, and the annual ArtSway Open which returns to the gallery in December.

Workshops being offered at the gallery for both adults and children, including our regular Children's After School Clubs and Adult Life Drawing, are now booking so be quick if you want to grab a space.

Co-commissioned by ArtSway and the text+work programme at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth, Dinu Li is developing new work as part of his exploration of what is signified by the word ‘country’ in Chinese. The ArtSway exhibition brings together the video installation ‘Ancestral Nation’ (the first part of a planned trilogy) with new works which contribute to ‘Family Village’, (the second part). ‘Family Village’ will be presented at The Gallery, The Arts Institute at Bournemouth (16 March - 17 April 2009). A full colour publication published by text+work will accompany that exhibition.

Portfolio Day

Ten half-hour slots for artists from all backgrounds for critiques, portfolio reviews and career advice with Director Mark Segal and Curator Peter Bonnell. COST: £5 per person.

A Tale of Two Towns: Wednesday 12 November 2008 at 7pm
A Lecture By Steve Pharoah, Regional Director (Masterplanning & Urban Design) for Halcrow Group Ltd

This lecture by Steve Pharoah will contextualise the background to Li’s project, ‘Family Village’, beginning with a brief overview of Halcrow, the international planning and design company responsible for the design of Qingyang and for much prize winning work throughout China. Pharoah will focus on the comparisons and contrasts between Chinese and British design, and the relevance of a historic English market town to a western central Chinese city.

Laura Green: Knowing and Not Knowing

Running concurrently with Dinu Li's 'Family Village', ArtSway hosts an exhibition of new work by London-based artist Laura Green from this Saturday.

Laura was the winner of the ArtSway Open 07 and returns to the gallery for her solo show. Expect a broad range of work, from installation-based abstraction through to intricate graphical pieces, from this exciting young British artist.

Children's After School Art Clubs

Our Children's After School Art Clubs return after the summer break. All details can be found below on the courses we offer.

Tuesdays for 5 – 7 year olds (with Marcia Hull)

DATES: September 9, 16, 23, 30/October 7, 14, 21/November 4, 11, 18, 25/December 2, 9, 16

Wednesdays for 7 – 11 year olds (with Laura Joy)
DATES: September 10, 17, 24/October 1, 8, 15/November 5, 12, 19, 26/December 3, 10, 17


Thursdays for 5 – 7 year olds (with Mia Khalaf)

DATES: September 11, 18, 25/October 2, 9, 16, 23/November 6, 13, 20, 27/December 4, 11, 18

COST: £6 per workshop, payable in two half-term instalments of £42.

Saturday Morning Art Club
ArtSway also offers a Saturday Morning Art Club for 6 – 11 year olds. It runs every Saturday during term time from 10am – 12pm and is led by Sway based artist Marcia Hull.

COST: £7 per workshop, or £42 payable half termly.


Adult Life Drawing

An opportunity for the beginner to develop new skills drawing directly from the nude male or female form. Also a chance for the experienced to develop and build upon their existing skills. People who attend the life drawing class benefit from expert tuition given by local artist Gina Dearden, who demonstrates a variety of techniques, employing a diverse range of media.

Every Fortnight on Thursdays, 7pm - 9pm (during school term-times)

Cost: £10 per session, including materials, paper and use of an easel.

Future Exhibitions

Figuring Landscapes


25 November - 30 November 2008

Figuring Landscapes brings together artists' moving images from the UK and Australia around themes of landscape curated by Catherine Elwes and Steven Ball. Screening programmes will be complemented by an international symposium at Tate Modern and a series of workshops at ArtSway in the New Forest. The programmes will tour the UK before travelling to Australia where they will be exhibited at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and the DELL Gallery in Brisbane. Figuring Landscapes is funded by Arts Council England.

Gallery Talk: Catherine Elwes and Steven Ball in Conversation

Saturday 29 November 2008 at 3pm

Figuring Landscapes curators and artists Catherine Elwes and Steven Ball will discuss the ideas behind the screening programme, and how landscape is imagined and experienced through the moving image in both Australia and the UK.

ArtSway Open 08

6 December 2008 - 15 February 2009

This December sees the return of ArtSway's highly popular annual Open exhibition. ArtSway Open 07 saw more than 300 artists from across the UK and Europe submit almost 800 artworks for consideration by the selectors.

Once again there is no formal brief, artists are asked to submit work that reflects their current artistic activity and contributes to a high quality survey of contemporary practice.

This year's selection panel includes Camilla Brown, Senior Curator at The Photographers' Gallery, and Laura Green, winner of ArtSway Open 07, alongside Peter Bonnell (ArtSway Curator) and Mark Segal (ArtSway Director).
