ArtSway Information - July 2007
 
ArtSway Information e-newsletters provide you with a regular update of what is happening at ArtSway. New Exhibition

Ma Yongfeng: The Cretaceous Period
28 July - 16 September 2007
Reception for the Artist: Saturday 28 July 2007, 2pm - 5pm.  All welcome.

Chinese artist Ma Yongfeng explores the presentation of the world in natural history museums, and dioramas recreated in the artist's studio.  Ma was in residence at ArtSway and the Chinese Art Centre, Mancheseter in the first part of 2007 researching and developing new work for this exhibition.

Join Rob La Frenais, curator at the Arts Catalyst, and Peter Bonnell, ArtSway Exhibitions and Education Officer, in conversation with Ma Yongfeng as the artist discusses the link between science and art in his work, and his experiences of being in residence at ArtSway.  FREE

Gallery Talk: Work in Context (Geology): Thursday 6 September 7pm
Dr Derek Siviter, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, will talk about the presentation of geological findings in the natural history museum, with visual representations of fossils from China and the UK.  FREE, Booking Essential

Joel Papps: goodpasture's

Reception for the Artist: Saturday 28 July 2007, 2pm - 5pm.  All welcome.

The winner of ArtSway's Open07, Joel Papps, presents an exhibition of new work using sculptural cutouts on industrial woodboard and paintings on the same materials which plough the artist's autobiographical experiences in intensive care whilst suffering from Goodpasture's syndrome in 2000.

Join ArtSway Open06 winnaer and Hampshire resident Joel Papps for an informal tour of his exhibition goodpasture's.  During the tour Joel will discuss his work and ideas with ArtSway's Exhibitions Officer Peter Bonnell.  FREE

Kid's workshop: Inside the Body: blood, bones and guts!
Tuesday 21 August, 10:30am - 3:30pm, with artist Joel Papps.

Make a giant body model with organs designed by you and your friends. Wood, paint and other sticky materials provided.  For ages 6 - 11.  Cost £22, Early Booking Essential.

Perfect Paper Making
Wednesday 25 July, 10.30am - 3.30pm

A great chance to learn how to pulp and make your own personal paper - using a variety of techniques colour and materials.  With Salisbury based artist Laurence Rushby

Marvellous Clay Modelling
Wednesday 1 August, 10.30am - 3.30pm

An opportunity to make your own madcap clay models! Learn how to sculpt and also make plater cast moulds of what you make in clay.  With local ceramacist Jackie Giron.

Even More Amazing Animation!
Wednesday 8 August, 10.30am - 3.30pm

Another day of filming your own crazy animation films using plastecine, drawing or your own body!  A chance to also learn new stuff for those who have been before.  With filmaker Steve Lewis.

Super Summer Self Portraits!
Wednesday 15 August, 10.30am - 3.30pm

A day of making portraits of your lovely self!  Using cameras, computers, paints and pencils come and make your own magic masterpiece!  With artist Lesley Green.

Don't Be So Shellfish!!
Wednesday 22 August, 10.30am - 3.30pm

Using wire, tissue paper and papier-mache, a chance to design and produce your own crazy crabs, fantastic fish and all sorts of marine marvels.  With Emily Stracey.

Pop-up Postcards!
Wednesday 29 August 2007, 10.30am - 3.30pm

With the aid of the art of optical illusion, bring your pictures to life! Using your own drawings, photographs and even postcards from your holidays, come and create a pop-up world!  With Rachel Larkins.

Amazing Automata!
Tuesday 31 July, 11am - 3pm

Join artist Rachel Larkins in bringing to life your own mechanised marvels. Inspired by summer, create flapping seaguslls, bobbing boats and your own Punch and Judy puppets.

Extreme Craft
Tuesday 14 August, 11am - 3pm

Join the 'nu-craft' trend and be ahead of the style pack.  Focusing on retro and vintage handicrafts such as knitting, applique, embroidery, sewing and felt making, make a brooch or funky sock for your ipod.  With textile artist Zoe Keeton.

Mexican Mask Mania!
Tuesday 28 August, 11am - 3pm

A taste for the macabre? Fabricate a Mexican 'Day of the Dead' skull, or a 'Lucha Libre' mask designed yourself.  If you love Nacho Libre, you'll love this.  With Zoe Keeton.

Residency News

ArtSway's next artist in residence is Alex Frost.  Alex will be in residence at ArtSway for two months from August.  He currently has a solo exhibition at Galerie Sandra Buergel, Berlin entitled 'Adults' and and one at Tramway in Glasgow entitled 'Format Wars' (image pictured). 

Following Alex Frost will be Hannah Maybank.  Alex Frost was chosen from a shortlist of artists nominated by Art Gallery Directors from the South of England and Hannah Maybank was successful in applying for ArtSway's open call for residency applications.  We look forward to welcoming them both to Sway.

ArtSway Xtra News

Unfairground Ride
25 July - 15 September 2007

at Salisbury Art Centre

Swoop, fly, twirl and role on the unfariground.  Dance for camera pieces combine with site specific installation and a brand new site specific film, all made with a spherical camera designed by the artist.
