Dear AAAI Member,
I am pleased to announce that Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, one of our 6 AAAI artists, has a new exhibition opening on 9 February 2006. Time Stands Still (1916 & 1991-2001) will be on view at Kilmainham Gaol Museum from 9 February 2006 until 12 March 2006. The museum is located on Inchicore Road, Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland.
You are all invited to the private view on Thursday 9 February 2006 at 6.30pm.
Elpida's exhibition of digital photography brings together two congrous conflicts: The Easter Rising, Ireland, 1916 and the war and subsequent fall of Yugoslavia, 1991-1992. Elpida would like to thank the National Library of Ireland, OPW and Arts Council England for their support.
This exhibition will be touring to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje and possibly to the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Belgrade and Zagreb and the Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Arts.

Time Stands Still brings together two different bodies of work. While in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Elpida started looking into the history of Ireland in relation to the history of her own country, Macedonia. Macedonia is a country recently involved in ethnic and political conflict and currently dealing with new notions of identity and boundaries; negotiating local, regional and international boundaries, encompassing ethnic, economic and social changes. Ireland went through similar shifts one hundred years ago and is now a major European nation.
Elpida became particularly interested in the history of the Easter Rising, 1916 and the history of the Kilmainham Gaol.
Using digital photography and image manipulation she explored the architecture of the Kilmainham Gaol Museum and found images to investigate notions of identity, nationalism and cultural development.

The Kilmainham Gaol, now Museum, originally opened in 1796, four years before the Act of Union abolished the Irish Parliament in Dublin and replaced it with direct rule from Westminster. It closed in 1924, two years after the signing of the Treaty, which led to the declaration of a Republic in 1949.
Elpida's work incorporates the architecture of the Goal and images of the 14 executed leaders of the Easter Raising, 1916. Elpida found the portraits in The National Photographic Archives and used them within the layers of the architectural photographs of the Gaol.
After showing her work in progress to the museum's curator, Patrick Cooke, he offered Elpida the opportunity to exhibit the finished work in the East Wing, which was the main prison wing of the Kilmainham Gaol. |
The second part of Elpida's exhibition consists of 14 images of the once beautiful landscape of the Former Yugoslavia. Elpida recently revisited 14 landscapes where executions took place between 1989 and 2001. These landscapes are now in Croatia, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Serbia, Macedonia and the autonomy of Kosovo. Elpida's photographs investigate places such as Vukovar, Slavonija, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Srebrenica and the famous bombing of Vukovar Bridge and surrounding villages which marked the beginning of the war.
During her trip Elpida met with various curators, galleries and artist groups and used the opportunity to talk to them, exchange ideas and show work in progress. During ArtSway's exhibition at the Venice Biennale Elpida met a few curators from the Balkans and would like to extend this communication in terms of possible future exhibitions.
