ArtSway Xtra Welcome to the February issue of ArtSway Xtra, a chance to gain more information about the gallery as well as artists we work with and what they are currently upto in today's art scene. Photography Talk Wednesday 6 February, 7pm - 9pm 'The Role of Contemporary Photography in Today's Institutions and Practices' In February ArtSway hosts a documentary photography talk with Guy Moreton from Southampton Solent University. The talk will explore the the motivations that drive today's artists and photographers and look at the strategies and working practices they choose to communicate their work. Keep an eye on our website for further details. User Group Meeting Thursday February 7, 6:30pm You are invited to the ArtSway User Group Meeting: Thursday February 7, 6:30pm The ArtSway User Group meeting held twice a year offer an opportunity to discuss ArtSway's programme and activites. This is your opportunity as an artist, visitor, participant and/or parent, to contribute to the development of our work. The ArtSway User Panel also elects two people to the ArtSway Management Committee (our governing panel) at this meeting. If you want to be included for nomination or want more information please email: mark.segal@artsway.org.uk ArtSway Connect ArtSway Connect is ArtSway's development programme, which we plan to develop throughout 2008. Portfolio Day Workshops Adult and children's workshops continue throughout February with life drawing classes on Thursday evenings with artist Gina Deardon as well as regular children's after school club activities throughout the week. February sees an additional adult workshop at the gallery. Artist News Simon Faithful'Freehand' Arratia Beer, Berlin 15 December, 2007 Ð 26 January, 2008 Simon is currently showing in a group exhibiotion at Arratia Beer in Berlin. Others contributing to the show include D-L Alvarez, David Hatcher and Marco Maggi. The show is in the last couple of weeks, so if you are in the area take a look. The show is curated by Mercedes Vicente, Contemporary Art Curator at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand. Continuing his systematic and diarist approach, Simon Faithfull’s Antarctica Dispatches (2004-2005) and 12 Postcards from Berlin (2006) are daily sketches, the former in Antarctica, the latter cycling around Berlin. Alistair GentryAlistair has now completed his recent video piece, 'Video with National Characteristics', on the People’s Republic of China, Schenzhen and is currently looking for a suitable place to show his finished work. 'Video with National Characteristics' was made at the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal of the He Xianging Art Museum in Schenzen, China, during a residency in the autumn and winter of 2007. Titled ‘Buddleia’, Best is showing a film piece that observes the surreality of everyday practices and experiences; resulting in a beautiful film that crosses Plymouth’s urban and marine landscapes.
Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva‘Butterflies in the stomach' Galerie Ateliers L’H Du Siege 12 January - 23 February 2008 Elpida is currently showing new work in France at the Galerie L'H Du Siege following a three-month residency in 2007. The show borrows, reworks and repeats motifs left over from the lace makers of Valenciennes creating a link between the traditional trade of lace making and the work of the artist. ArtSway Director Mark Segal has contributed text to a publication documenting the show. She is currently exhibiting at the Haus am Waldsee Gallery in Berlin presenting over 20 large-scale, landscape works pivotal to the her career and reflecting her studies with Tilmans from 1993 to 2000 in Hamburg. Peter's talk will begin at 4pm followed by a Private View of the exhibition from 5:30pm. The show runs from 10 December 2007 until 25 January 2008.
