Current Exhibition

Nathaniel Mellors

6 October - 25 November 2007

We are really pleased with The Time Surgeon, the new installation from Nathaniel Mellors. This new work was created while Nathaniel Mellors was artist in residence at ArtSway this year, in a partnership with the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. The Time Surgeon, which is a co-commission with Biennale dÕArt Contemporain de Lyon, features a film-installation in which the central character, ÔThe Time SurgeonÕ, inflicts physical torture upon a tape machine to induce time travel. Nathaniel is know for his ad-hoc sculpture, psychedelic theatre and absurdist, satirical films which target the question of who controls language.

Last yearÕs Open was won by Hampshire based sculptor Joel Papps. His exhibition, goodpastures, took place at ArtSway during the summer of 2007, to great acclaim. Many visitors commented that his work, which explored a debilitating illness that affected the artist in 2000, and after which his exhibition was named, was an intriguing success. JoelÕs exhibition was given a positive review in the October 2007 issue of Art Monthly.

Joel has been invited back to ArtSway as one of four members of the selection panel along with ArtSwayÕs Director, Mark Segal, and Curator of Exhibitions and Education, Peter Bonnell. Maintaining ArtSwayÕs strong links with the Milton Keynes Gallery, Director Michael Stanley is also present on the board.

Simon Faithfull

Simon Faithfull is currently exhibiting at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland as part of the ‘[C]artography: Map-Making as Artform’ show.  Simon is one of a number of contributing artists, including Frank Bowling, Stephen Brandes and Turner-Prize winner, Grayson Perry.

The show seeks to explore the techniques and styles of early map-makers as well as focusing on contemporary artists who use mapping methodologies in their art practice.  This is an extremely ambitious exhibition and sees numerous artists coming together to create a unique approach to a very-different artistic show.  The earliest map in the exhibition is from 1842, sitting alongside computer digital maps, to produce a dichotomy of cartographic practice and a representation of an ever-changing world in a highly prevalent medium.

The exhibition is on until 10 November 2007 www.crawfordartgallery.com

Additionally, Simon's official website can be found at www.simonfaithfull.org

Alistair Gentry

Another ArtSway Associate, Alistair Gentry, is currently undertaking a residency programme at He Xiangning Art Museum's Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) in Shenzhen, China.  Alistair is making a short-film strongly influenced by the setting and Chinese culture.

OCT Contemporary Art Terminal( OCAT) of He Xiangning Art Museum is founded in 2005. It is unique in being the first contemporary art institution to be established in association with, and administered by, a State-owned art museum in China and the first to be opened outside of Beijing.

The film, speculatively titled, 'Video with National Characteristics', is based around the city of Schenzen's equivalent of many of China's domestic attractions and replications that have ensued of neighbouring Hong Kong.  Shenzhen is the Chinese government's attempt at making a copy of Hong Kong.  Focusing on numerous elements of the corruption in China and the poor conditions many residents face, the film includes footage of the many amusement parks in Shenzen (based on a copy of Hong Kong's 'Disneyland) as well as the 'citadels' of the super-rich which seemlessly overlook the smoking factories and seas of workers inhabitating these industrial plants.  The video aims to highlight the plight of China against it's more powerful, financially-superior neighbour and the nationalistic tendencies that are present.  With the upcoming 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing, China is a divided country in terms of wealth, living conditions and future opportunities. This film goes about shedding light on this known, but not often stated, fact.

Alistair is looking for places in Hong Kong to show the finished work as well as UK arena's on his return.  We look forward to seeing the final result of this interesting and subversive piece.

For more information on Alistair's work please go to www.alistairgentry.demon.co.uk

Charlie Murphy

Charlie has been working hard on the continuing progress of her 'Salute' project.  Salute is a performance staged in the rigging of Tall Ships, which transforms a maritime peace gesture from the age of sail of 'Manning the Yards' into flamboyant visual theatre.  The event is in development for presentation in Liverpool, London and Portsmouth and depending on success may be toured to other historic docks and quaysides in the UK and Internationally.  The project is funded by ArtSway and numerous additional partners.

Please see Charlie's website for further details www.charliemurphy.co.uk
