Welcome to the December 2008 issue of ArtSway Xtra, an e-newsletter containing information about the gallery, as well as the artists we work with and contemporary arts news from around the region. On Saturday 6 December 2008 we have the opening of the ArtSway Open 08 with a private view and reception for the artists. Also, in addition to the opening of ArtSway Open 08, ArtSway is hosting a day of Open Studios with an invitation to look around the artist's studios and talk to them about their practice. This is a unique chance to see what goes on behind closed doors at the gallery, as well as a timely opportunity to perhaps find a one-of-a-kind gift in time for Christmas. More details on this below. Drinks and snacks will be served from 2pm - all are welcome on the day. Since its launch two months ago, ArtSway Associates has successfully started to support in different and bespoke ways, the professional development of the ten artists who have previously undertaken an ArtSway residency. Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, is in the final shortlist of three artists for exhibition at the Macedonian Pavilion, 53rd International Art Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia. She should hear in the next few days if she is successful. Website maintenance for Emilia Telese and Charlie Murphy is planned for next week with Markus Lloyd. Charlie will also undertake video editing training in London. A day's training from legal professionals looking at contracts for artists is being developed for all the artists which will take place in the New Year. We are offering economical and funding advice to painter Hannah Maybank and discussing a research project with Anne Hardy. Mark Segal, ArtSway’s director, has been carrying out a number of studio visits across London and the South East regions to discuss ArtSway Associates’ individual practices, aspirations and projects. He is also developing a touring exhibition proposal with Simon Faithfull, which will be sent to a range of galleries around the country to elicit interest.

Dinu Li - Press The * Then Say Hello 15 November 2008 - 22 February 2009 Manchester Art Gallery Having recently returned from China where he had been filming the second part of his trilogy, Ancestral Nation, Dinu Li is now in the process of editing the footage for his forthcoming exhibition, Family Village, which will shown at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth (in association with ArtSway) in March 2009. As part of ArtSway Associates, Dinu Li has also been receiving support to develop a research application to the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which it is hoped will support the development of the last and final part of Ancestral Nation. Dinu is also currently showing in Manchester. In Press The * Then Say Hello, Li presents a series of photographic portraits of people from diverse communities calling home from international phone centres. The body language of each caller reveals something about the closeness of private telephone conversations met with the distance of the call’s receiver, whilst making reference to the work of one of Li’s favourite artists, the 17th Century Dutch painter, Vermeer. FUTURE EXHIBITION Jordan Baseman UK based film artist Jordan Baseman is making new work in and around Soho interviewing inhabitants who range from the notorious to the anonymous, including hedonists and faded actors. The interview process is at the heart of Baseman's work. He heavily edits this recorded material, juxtaposing the finished interviews with film footage taken in and around Soho, to construct narratives that mimic and yet subvert the traditional documentary film format. The end product will be a series of films that are at once semi-narrative, poetic and revealing. The works will create a portrait of a place that is both constant and fleeting. Jordan Baseman has been co-commissioned by ArtSway and The Photographers' Gallery. Jordan's exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery will follow his ArtSway show, running from 1 May - 28 June 2009. For more information see www.jordanbaseman.co.uk Gallery Talk: Jordan Baseman in Conversation with Peter Bonnell To book a place on the above event please contact Jack Lewis on 01590 682260 (ext.16) or email: jack.lewis@artsway.org.uk |
