The Horesehead Nebula and the Belt of Orion. Image captured at the New Forest Observatory, Brockenhurst, Hampshire by Prof. Greg Parker and processed by Noel Carboni in Florida, U.S.A. |
Deep Sky 3 September - 5 September 2010 ArtSway presents an exhibition of Professor Greg Parker's latest deep sky images. An example of work can be seen here on the left, and further image information is as follows: The three “belt” stars of Orion, Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka are seen here together with the most photographed region of the deep-sky – the Horsehead nebula and the Flame nebula. The Flame nebula [NGC2024] is an HII region at a distance of ~1,300 light years, and the Horsehead nebula [Barnard 33] is a dark nebula (absorbing region) at a distance of ~1,500 light years. The distance from the horse’s nose to his mane is approximately 1.5 light years, or about 1,000 times the diameter of the orbit of Pluto around our Sun. At the base of the Horse’s head is a nice little (blue) reflection nebula [NGC2023]. This image is created from 2 separate frames taken with a Sky 90 refractor at f#4.5 and an SXVF-M25C one-shot colour astronomical CCD. The data includes narrowband H-alpha and H-beta added to the full colour RGB. Total exposure time for this image is well in excess of 40 hours. You can also see a collection of Greg's earlier work in the recent publication, 'Star Vistas, Springer. 2009, with forewords by Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Sir Patrick Moore and Dr. Brian May. Gallery Event: Private View and Presentation Friday 3 September 2010, 6pm - 8pm Professor Greg Parker will give a short PowerPoint presentation on 'The Magic of Photography', along with a chance to view his latest deep sky images displayed in ArtSway's galleries. FREE: All Welcome. |

Art in Context: Philosophy: What is (the point of) philosophical aesthetics? Dr Alex Neill, Reader in Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, University of Southampton Wednesday 6 October 2010 at 7pm The abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman once remarked, "Aesthetics is for artists what ornithology is for birds." Was he right? In this talk, Alex Neill will outline some of the main issues and areas of thought in philosophical aesthetics, the philosophy of art, with a view to showing that Newman was wrong – that collaboration and discussion between artists and philosophers of art could be valuable for both.
