ArtSway Associates Programme

ArtSway is pleased to announce the launch of the ArtSway Associates programme offering selected artists training, support and advice over the next three years.

Complementing ArtSway’s exhibition residency and commissioning programme, ArtSway Associates aims to provide legacy support for a selection of ten artists who have previously undertaken residencies at ArtSway. It is a continuing professional development programme which offers critical support, advocacy, training and seed funding for creative activity over three years. ArtSway Associates is financially supported by The Leverhulme Trust and Arts Council England.

Audiences and arts professionals can access information about the ArtSway Associates through ArtSway Xtra, ArtSway’s regular email newsletter (send an email to artswayxtra-join@artsway.org.uk).

The third ArtSway Associates meeting took place in November, and was led by Nicholas Sharp, an arts specialist lawyer in London. This session was the second in a series of training sessions on contracts development and is being used to develop the ArtSway Associates' contracts. ArtSway Director, Mark Segal, has been meeting with the ArtSway Associates on a one-on-one to finalise the agreements.

The programme has been fast developing, with funding going towards website training and development, publications, marketing, critical input, and support and advice from ArtSway Director, Mark Segal, on funding applications and proposals. In addition to the support offered by ArtSway, a few of the artists are also receiving mentoring from other arts professionals. For instance, Simon Faithfull is discussing his practice with Andrew Wheatley, Co-Director, Cabinet Gallery, while Emilia Telese has undertaken the first of a series of meetings with Robin Klassnik, Director, Matt's Gallery.

In other news, the Associates have also been busy making limited edition artworks for ArtSway's new selling website, which can be viewed here. Notably, Emilia Telese has been commissioned by ArtSway to develop and produce a series of limited edition prints, while Alistair has been developing scaled down versions of busts of Dr John Dee.

Alistair Gentry

www.gentry-a.co.uk

Following support from the ArtSway Associates programme, Alistair was awarded an Arts Council England Grants for Arts in 2009 for his new live video / live performance project Magickal Realism. Magickal Realism forms part of a much larger, long-term project reconnecting contemporary art with traditional British forms and genres.

The project is based on Dr John Dee, the proto-scientist, court magician and fortune-teller to Queen Elizabeth I, who was a much respected scientist in his own time, but subsequently derided as a conjurer and a trickster.

Magickal Realism premiered at Colchester Arts Centre in February 2010, it was shown at Southampton Solent University in May, and is due to be performed on the Isle of Wight later on in the year.

You can keep up with the progress of Magickal Realism and view images of its first ever performance  (taken by fellow ArtSway Associate Charlie Murphy!)  by clicking here.

Alistair also recently led a series of sculpture workshops at Hardley School, Hampshire, as organized by ArtSway as part of Push for Culture scheme. He has also been making limited edition busts of Dr John Dee, which can be seen as part of his Magickal Realism performance. These are currently available to but directly from Alistair’s website or from the ArtSway shop.

Currently, he is in the final stages of completing his first draft of his forthcoming book, titled Career Suicide: Ten Years as a Free Range Artist, which shares his experiences of the artworld and his life as an artist.  The publication is due to be launched in September 2010 and we ill keep you updated of its progress…
