Reoccuring Undulation, 2011, Salmon skins on zinc plated tiles, 960 tiles of 20cm x 20cm

Throughout the summer months, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva's work can be seen in the group exhibition, Compulsive, Obsessive, Repetitive at the Towner, Eastbourne. Compulsive, Obsessive, Repetitive is a group show of six artists who obsessively use small-scale repetitive processes to create large-scale sculptural installations. Hadzi-Vasileva is exhibiting ‘Reoccurring Undulation’, a work made from 960 salmon skin tiles that have undergone intense cleaning and preserving processes to reveal the latent beauty of this discarded matter.

Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva has been commissioned to develop new site-specific artworks for Parkside Place in Cambridge. Parkside Place is designed to be one of the most central and prestigious new developments in Cambridge for years; it is a prime residential development in the heart of Cambridge. The scheme developed by Grosvenor, has been designed by Glenn Howells Architects, building contractors, Willmott Dixon, Art Consultants, InSite Arts Ltd.

Elpida is also one of the contributing team members to Artchitecture, a collaborative project between artists, architects, and engineers, in association with Solent Centre for Architecture + Design Ltd in Southampton.

Elpida has received mentoring from James Lingwood, Co-Director, Artangel, on the development of her practice, and a series of further meetings are scheduled across 2011. Earlier this year she also took part in a two day taxidermy training workshop, which will be very useful to her practice!

Pied à Terre's first ever Artist in Restaurant

This September two Michelin-starred restaurant Pied à Terre will present an exhibition of works by Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, following an eight-month residency. Hadzi-Vasileva is Pied à Terre’s first ‘Artist in Restaurant’ - an annual residency scheme for emerging artists. The Wish of the Witness will comprise ten sculptural and installation works made primarily using raw materials sourced from the restaurant kitchen, including scallop skirts and corals, quail carcasses, sheep testicles, fish skins, bones and ladies clutch bags and purses made out of testicle sacs.

The resulting works are carefully balanced between the beautiful and the brutal, recomposing decomposition into beautiful forms. The Wish of the Witness follows a period of in-depth research by the artist, in close collaboration with the chefs and influenced by the restaurant’s daily routines and menus.

You can keep up to date with Elpida's residency, her thoughts, and observations, as she continues her ARTISTS TALKING-Exposing Visual Artists' Practice blog.

	Raison D’être, SouthGate Project, Bath

Raison D’être for SouthGate Shopping Centre, Bath, is currently in its third phase of development. The proposed work, commencing later this year, is influenced by the Bath Abbey Fan Vaulting, designed by Robert and William Vertue, with reconstruction (c.1860) by George Gilbert Scott, and the history of theatre and fashion of Bath.

As the artist comments: “The main inspiration behind Raison D'être was the history of Bath being regarded as a sacred place since ancient times, the hot springs being the focal point for legend, pilgrimage, worship, healing, enjoyment and commercial activity for thousands of years.”

For Raison D’être, Hadzi-Vasileva is creating 12,000 petal shapes, each 20cm x 10cm, made out of specially designed stainless steel woven cloth. The petals are then joined together using steel strips that will create an edge, which will be gilded with 23.5-carat gold leaf. The structures will be positioned under two arched bridges, creating an intriguing and beautiful canopy.

	Inherent Beauty

Installation of Inherent Beauty, 2010, Public Room, Skopje

Elpida recently unveiled new work during her solo exhibition at the Public Room, Skopje, Macedonia: a stunningly beautiful tapestry like wall, created from hand crafted tiles made from hundreds of pigs’ stomachs. Photographs of the exhibition, titled Inherent Beauty, can be viewed on Elpida’s website.

	Motectum

Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva’s solo exhibition, Motectum (Thursday 30 April – Sunday 31 May 2009), marked the end of her year-long Artist Residency at Gloucester Cathedral.

	Gunna Dress, 2009

Motectum took inspiration from Thomas Tallis’ (1505 - 1585) remarkable 40-voice Spem in Alium, and drew on the history of the cathedral, its cloisters, and Gloucestershire’s natural habitats. Presenting a sound installation of pre-recorded human and bird voices and live relay in the Cloister, and portrait heads made out of chickens', pheasants' and ducks' heads. The opening night's performance confused the discarded and the ceremonial in a gown made out of chicken skins.

An ArtSway Xtra coach trip took place in May 2009 to view the exhibition and to attend a talk by Elpida.

	We Are Shadows

We Are Shadows, 2008, Unit 2, London

During August and September 2008, Elpida could be found at Unit 2 Gallery, where she created the on-site installation and subsequent exhibition, We Are Shadows (3 October - 1 November 2008).

Commissioned by Unit 2, Elpida created a large ‘veil’ structure from halal chicken skins which was suspended from the ceiling of the gallery. Elpida used the location of Unit 2, (located opposite what is often considered to be London’s East End most famous street, Brick Lane) to produce this site specific work through the exploration of the area and its relation to food, migration, cultural identity, memory and history, all of which are central to Elpida’s practice.

More information as well as a specially commissioned essay by Alison Wilding can be found on Elpida’s website. An ArtSway Xtra coach trip took place in October 2008 to view the exhibition and to listen to Elpida talk on We Are Shadows.
