ART CRACKER GOES OFF WITH A BANG!

Father Christmas hand print cards, scented clove oranges, willow Christmas tree decorations were just some of the activities participants made at ArtSway’s ‘Art Cracker’ this Saturday 03rd December 2011. The event was a great success with a hundred plus people attending the event.

Stalls providing activities were set up around the gallery for all to try out and make things to take home. As part of the day participants enjoyed a bring and share lunch, as initiated by the Eden Projects scheme ‘The BIG Lunch.’ The scheme encourages communities, groups and families to provide opportunities to eat and share food together. The lunch was hosted in the galleries with all enjoying a winter picnic on the gallery floors!

A participant commented ‘I enjoyed everything- my girls and I loved it. The atmosphere was lovely and we have gone home with some fab things. The food was great, especially the soup!’

Education Co-ordinator Emma Purchase commented ‘It was lovely to see so many people support the event and to be able to provide a creative hub for all to enjoy making, eating and being together. People of all ages were supporting each other to be creative and the day really promoted a festive spirit. I certainly went away feeling with the Christmas feeling!’

ArtSway have worked in partnership with The EDGE Project to deliver the festive community event and hope to provide similar opportunities in the future. All donations raised will support the GREEN SPACE project the two organisations run that creates green spaces within the community to produce foods, bring people together and to be creative.

ArtSway losing two members of staff

Cuts in National Arts funding lead to job losses at ArtSway

In the current round of Arts Council England (ACE) decisions, ArtSway was among the organisations who were not fortunate enough to be accepted onto the National Portfolio, despite having been an ACE regularly-funded organisation for some years. At the same time, ACE South East indicated that any further project or programme funding would need to take into account revised national priorities in Arts funding. This could include a change in focus from presenting a regular on-going exhibition programme in the current gallery space in Sway to an even more focused programme of mentoring and support for contemporary visual artists in their continuing professional development, with negotiated partnership for their work to be shown nationally and internationally.

It is emphasised that these decisions of ACE South East in no way reflected on the value the funding body place on ArtSway’s track record of achievements, notably the success of the Venice Biennale pavilion. This combination of circumstances has, however, reduced ArtSway’s capacity to maintain the existing staff complement and led to the departure of two members of staff, Director Mark Segal and marketing and Digital Development Officer Jack Lewis.

They will both be leaving ArtSway at the end of October.

ArtSway’s Board of Trustees wish to acknowledge the significant achievement and commitment of both members of staff.

Peter Jones, Chair of the Board said of Director Mark Segal: “In the 12 years that Mark Segal has been with us, his leadership and curation have earned for ArtSway an extraordinarily high reputation, locally and internationally. It has been an amazing experience for all involved and we are all very sorry to see him go. Jack Lewis has been with us for 4 years and has been instrumental in developing the new ArtSway website, marketing and digital development strategy. We will all miss him.”

ArtSway is currently reviewing all elements of its operation and will soon publish a new strategy for a sustainable future within the new austerity of its funding situation. ArtSway's education programme, working with schools, colleges and groups will continue.

For all enquiries on this release please contact:

	Look About: Transmission: 29 October – 3 December 2011

Preview and Artist Reception: Saturday 29 October 2011, 2pm

Look About: Artefacts is a two-week exhibition at ArtSway that will include elements of research material that Jon has gathered from around the south east – including illustration and ‘fossils’, such as hair clips, napkins and train timetables. Look About: Transmission is a screen-based work featuring film, animation and sound works inspired by Jon’s mapping of Cultural Olympiad events in the south east. Elements of both Look About: Artefacts and Transmission will travel around the south east until July 2012 with partner venues including: Aspex, Chapel Arts, Southampton City Art Gallery, University of Portsmouth, Milton Keynes Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, Quay Arts, LV21, Pallant House and Winchester Discovery Centre. Transmission will then be showing at the British Geological Survey during the London 2012 games.

Inclusion and accessibility lie at the heart of the Look About project. It involves Deaf and disabled artists within the south east region of England and aspires to shift cultural attitudes towards disability in the arts. Jon Adams himself has been diagnosed with Aspergers and Dyslexia.

Look About is a two-year mapping and collecting project led by Portsmouth based artist Jon Adams in response to the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Inclusion and accessibility lie at the heart of the Look About project. It involves deaf and disabled artists within the South East region of England and aspires to shift cultural attitudes towards disability in the arts. Jon Adams himself has been diagnosed with Aspergers and Dsylexia.

ArtSway is the lead arts organisation in developing Look About with Adams, and will be the launch venue for Look About: Transmission – an interactive video work featuring images and sound gathered by the artist as he maps events in the South East region. Look About: Transmission will preview at ArtSway in September 2012 and will then travel to galleries in the South East of England, returning to ArtSway in July 2012 to coincide with the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics.

ArtSway: rethinking the way

On this page, we want to engage our communities in discussing what we would like to see happen in the visual arts and the provision of high-quality, small-scale presentation outside urban places, alongside support for emerging and mid-career practice outside London.

	About ArtSway

ArtSway has a very highly regarded reputation for excellent exhibitions in Sway, while also supporting artists in developing and presenting their work, either offering emerging practitioners a significant commission (Simon Faithfull, Anne Hardy, Melanie Manchot) or encouraging a mid-career practitioner to extend and develop their practice (Richard Billingham made his first video work at ArtSway), and in many cases ArtSway also publishes a high-quality catalogue (Jamie Shovlin, Nathaniel Mellors, Christopher Orr, Gayle Chong Kwan, Dolly Thompsett). In addition, ArtSway has always partnered this approach with other institutions, principally our academic partner, The Arts University College at Bournemouth, but also with peer organisations around the country such as The Photographers’ Gallery, Oriel Davies Gallery, Chinese Art Centre and Autograph ABP.

From a small, architect designed white cube space in a rural place, almost unique in the UK, ArtSway has extended its work (and the artists) to an international audience through its tenacious and innovative presentations at the Venice Biennale. This has led many other larger scale organisations such as Milton Keynes Gallery, De La Warr Pavilion, Laing Art Gallery, MIMA and National Glass Centre to follow and develop similar approaches, while encouraging other small, artist focused groups, such as the Sheffield Pavilion, to deliver projects at Venice and Istanbul.

Locally, ArtSway offers engagement and participation across the New Forest, increasing the number of people who take part by nearly 20% in 2010-11. This includes people of all ages, from retired groups through to very young children and their carers, to young people at risk.

ArtSway’s achievements are remarkable. Everybody in the art sector comments on how the organisation has consistently ‘punched above its weight’, and all who visit are surprised by the quality of the gallery and its programme, while amazed to find it in a small village in the heart of the New Forest. ArtSway learnt earlier this year that it would not receive Arts Council England NPO funding. This is a blow, but the organisation is committed to continuing to deliver a high-quality programme and is currently undertaking an organisation review.

We are planning focus groups and online surveys through the autumn. If you would like to take part, please e-mail Jack Lewis expressing your interest. We would also welcome your comments and ideas for ArtSway's development below on this page.
