Sophy Rickett - To The River Exhibition at ARNOLFINI, BRISTOL

PLEASE NOTE - THIS EXHIBITION IS BEING HELD AT ARNOLFINI, BRISTOL.

In collaboration with Arnolfini and independent producer Elena Hill, ArtSway has commissioned an ambitious new video/sound installation work by the artist Sophy Rickett. In this project, provisionally entitled To The River, she continues to develop her interest in photography and film’s role as a mediator between people and the ‘natural world’.

The starting point and inspiration for To The River is the Severn Bore – the tidal wave that famously runs along the River Severn during the moon’s equinox.

Sophy writes: ‘The project will explore issues that have resonance locally, and also globally. I am interested in ideas around politics and the environment, and also in the very demanding and teleological relationship humans have with the natural world. I am also interested in the Bore as a subject in itself, and equally in its ‘agency’ in broader philosophical and cultural terms.’

To The River is produced by Elena Hill in collaboration with Arnolfini and ArtSway. The project received funding from Arts Council England, Arts and Humanities Research Council and WonderBox. Sophy Rickett exhibited To The River at the 54th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia 2011 as part of ArtSway's New Forest Pavilion.

	14 December – 17 December 2011 11.00am - 5.00pm

	Preview Evening ALL WELCOME: 14 December 2011, 7pm – 9pm

ArtSway is pleased to present the debut exhibition of ink drawings and oil paintings by Lymington based artist Adrian Waterton.

Waterton produces highly striking graphic work, based on a range of sources, ideas and inspirations – even to the extent of doodling on the shower screen when taking a shower. Many of these ideas can be considered strange, and some so complicated the artist states ‘…that even I can’t work out how to put them on paper’.

The artists continues, ‘My work always starts with a sheet of paper, a drawn rectangle box and some sort of repetitive design somewhere in the corner. When the picture is finished it bears no resemblance to the first few pen to paper marks or from the ideas I originally had. I draw my inspiration from a lot of shapes found around the home and use them as stencils. The sea on my ink drawing Bournemouth 1966 is made from old garden hedge trimmer blades.’ Waterton draws his inspiration from the mathematically precise and perplexingly ambivalent work of M.C. Escher; the artist comments on Esher’s work that he ‘…loved the illusion and quirky aspects of his drawings, his clever use of depth and deception.’

Adrian Waterton is a 46 year-old self-taught artist, who has developed a unique style of work – in essence something he describes as ‘modern graphic design with a twist of humour’. His work is a mix of waterproof ink, pure black paints and long lasting St Petersburg watercolours. Some of the works have found a following with architects in London who like the crisp sharp lines that take you on what the artist describes as ‘…a journey into infinity’. It is this ‘journey’, and perhaps a brush with death, that inspires part of Waterton’s work. In August 1998 he had a horrific motorbike accident and was told to start learning to write with his left hand due to severe damage and lack of grip. During this time of rehab, he developed his previously untapped artistic talent and hasn’t stopped since.

His debut exhibition is being sponsored by Paris Smith Solicitors who have a track record of sponsoring the arts. Peter Taylor, Head of the Dispute Resolution & Licensing, said:

“We believe that the arts and the creative sector are going to be the drivers of growth for our future economy. We are pleased to be sponsoring the debut exhibition of such a unique and talented artist and we know visitors to the exhibition will find his work both intriguing and fascinating. There’s something in there for all ages and tastes.”

For more information on Adrian Waterton’s work, please visit: www.watertonart.com

Paris Smith have kindly supported this exhibition.

	Thursday 8 - Saturday 10 11.00am - 5.00pm

Preview Evening Thursday 8 6.00pm - 8.00pm ALL ARE WELCOME

'Embellish' is an A Level Art Textile exhibition, with work based around self initiated themes and has an interconnecting connection between pieces through the exploration of individual identity.

'Embellish' supports the learning achieved on the course and all students involved have created an item or sculpture that conveys individual personalities, reflects their design ambitions and displays a passion for the subject. All of the pieces represent the students in a particular or personal way and the project has been an opportunity for the students to produce objects/ garments that represent personalities through an item of clothing.

	Statement from the students

As individuals we took inspiration from wider topics that could be examined and developed as a focus on for our final designs and ideas. The topics included; decay, print and text, water and reflections, delicate, and self. Together, as a group, we enjoy focusing on topics in which we can find interest to create a piece which relates to ourselves and styles as textile artists. We all delight in creating garments to be worn and therefore when researching artists we tend to focus on fashion, designers and the way that this relates to our specific textile subjects.

We have found the opportunity to exhibit at ArtSway exciting but also challenging as we have had short deadlines to meet!

Highcliffe School have developed a strong working relationship with ArtSway following the partnership scheme the two organisations worked on together 'Watch This Space 7' September 2010 - January 2011.

About 'Watch This Space':Gallery educators wishing to develop their work with schools were funded for nine days. They arranged a three-day placement in schools which regularly use galleries, to gain knowledge of the curriculum, teaching and learning methods and how gallery visits impact on classroom teaching. Gallery educators attended three days of training with engage and received three additional days' funding to complete project work related to the placement.

Preview Evening: Friday 25 6.00pm - 8.00pm ALL ARE WELCOME

'18 Hours' is a film exhibition by second year students studying BTEC Level 3 Media Production course at Brockenhurst College.

Over the two years of their course the students cover theoretical units and practical units which introduce and explore creative media industries, including graphic design, film production, animation and studio production.

On the second year of the course students are introduced to alternative and non-mainstream forms of media. One of the key experimental units covered in the course is Video Installation Work. This is introduced as a form of expressive art that enables the students to explore personal ideas and to address challenging content. Questions of narrative, aesthetics and the links between video recording and reality may be raised in the course of this unit. '18 Hours' showcases the start of this exploration and is an opportunity for students to test ideas in the professional context of a gallery.

As part of the exhibition the students will develop practical and theoretical skills in non-mainstream forms of video production and will acquire an understanding of setting up video installation work within an exhibition space, that will support their current studies.

	Artist Talk: Thursday 17 3.00pm - 5.00pm

	Preview: 6.00pm - 8.00pm

OPEN BRACKET showcases the work of selected third year fine art undergraduates from the Arts University College at Bournemouth.

As part of their current studies, the artists have to interpret their own practice in relation to others, whilst understanding the importance of a collaborative approach. For ‘Open Bracket’, each artist submitted a written proposal with images outlining their current practice, which was then considered and subsequently selected by ArtSway’s Curator Peter Bonnell and Education Co-ordinator Emma Purchase.

The exhibition is an opportunity for the emerging artists to present and discuss their work in a professional context and to reinforce their learning through experiencing the entire process of exhibiting.

The Arts University College at Bournemouth and ArtSway support each other’s work through a strategic partnership, and ‘Open Bracket’ is a continuation of this adademic understanding.

Jon Adams: Look About

Look About: Artefacts: 29 October – 12 November 2011
	Look About: Transmission: 29 October – 3 December 2011

Preview and Artist Reception: Saturday 29 October 2011, 2pm

Look About is a two-year mapping and collecting project led by Portsmouth based artist/geologist Jon Adams in response to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad in the south east of England.

Look About: Artefacts is a two-week exhibition in ArtSway’s main gallery space that will include elements of research material that Jon has gathered from around the south east – including illustrations and ‘fossils’, such as hair clips, napkins and train timetables.

Look About: Transmission is a screen-based work that will be situated in ArtSway’s foyer, featuring film, animation and sound works inspired by Jon’s mapping of Cultural Olympiad events in the South East. Elements of both Look About: Artefacts and Transmission (in various forms including digital and published) will be presented at various partner venues around the south east until July 2012 including: Aspex, Chapel Arts, Southampton City Art Gallery, University of Portsmouth, Towner Art Gallery, Milton Keynes Gallery, Quay Arts, Stour Valley Arts, LV21, Pallant House and Winchester Discovery Centre. Transmission will then be showing at the British Geological Survey during the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Jon Adams himself has been diagnosed with Aspergers and Dyslexia. Inclusion and accessibility lie at the heart of the Look About project. It involves Deaf and disabled artists within the south east region of England and aspires to shift cultural attitudes towards disability in the arts.

ArtSway is the lead arts organisation in developing Look About with Adams, and will be the launch venue for Look About: Transmission – an interactive video work featuring images and sound gathered by the artist as he maps events in the South East region. Look About: Transmission will preview at ArtSway in September 2012 and will then travel to galleries in the south east of England, returning to ArtSway in July 2012 to coincide with the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Look About Project has four distinct parts:

Look About Gather (including Look About: Transmission)

 Look About Interactive

 Look About Edition Mélange

 Look About Archive

For further information on the various elements of the Look About project, please see below for the section ‘About Look About’.

Jon Adams is a trained geologist who has, since November 2010, used observational techniques, data collection and mapping, to produce a continually evolving ‘biostratigraphy’ that will form the content of the Look About project (biostratigraphy is a geological term relating to the assigning of ages of rocks and fossils in layers to periods in time and looks similar to bar graphs or DNA samples). The geological metaphor stems from Adams’s personal struggle to become an artist within the conventional teaching environment and being forced to find an alternative career as a field geologist and palaeontologist. He has since reverted to art and become a successful illustrator and conceptual artist. Adams is able to uncover the hidden and unexpected; he is a collector by nature, highly observant, and an authentic detailer – all things needed to be a successful geologist.

The Look About project will produce – up to the end of the Paralympics in 2012 – an alternative but accurate geological stratigraphy of the evolution of the Cultural Olympiad in the South East, reflecting the location, type and content of art works and events in the region leading up to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Art works produced by Adams will include prints, video and sound works, accessible through websites and iPad's. Adams will undertake Look About as a collaborative exercise with geologists at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) at the University of Portsmouth (where he also teaches) and the British Geological Survey.

	About Look About:

Look About encompasses various elements and artefacts, all of which feed into each other in varying degrees:

Look About Gather involves the artist collecting, capturing and interpreting material gathered from deaf and disabled creative, arts and cultural organisations as well as wider Cultural Olympiad supporting public audiences. As a trained field geologist, palaeontologist and skilled artist, Adams is experienced at investigating, mapping and presenting diverse patterns of data. His Aspergers makes him highly observant, a collector by nature and an authentic detailer. During his time spent with artists and practitioners – in studios, rehearsals, interviews, workshops, performances – he will be hunting for specific elements but also uncovering the hidden and unexpected. The main outcome of Look About Gather will be the film artwork Look About: Transmission.

Look About: Transmission will take the form of a video artwork featuring information – such as photographs, sound clips and filmed images – gathered by Adams as he researches events across the South East of England relating to the Cultural Olympiad. This work will be launched at ArtSway and will then travel to gallery venues across the South East, developing at each new venue before finally returning to ArtSway for the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad in July 2012.

Look About Interactive aims to place the artist’s research and investigation within the public realm to encourage social mediation and spark further participation. Disability in the arts is a fertile, linguistically complex and politically sensitive arena and this part of the project is a key democratising opportunity, giving consumers a chance to mediate the labels and terms used. DAO (Disability Arts Online) will be providing internet space, not only to solicit and provoke further creative chain reactions, but to build an online collection of cultural objects through a truly participatory, less traditionally didactic process of digital cultural interactions.

Look About Edition Mélange is a collaboration with leading geologists, which will take the form of a unique ‘biostratigraphy’ of overlaid experiences captured and subverted in rich geological language. Reinterpreting selected elements from Look About, the work will be presented in a traditional geological format and produced as a series of online downloads from University of Portsmouth and a limited edition print/publication created in partnership with the British Geological Survey.

Look About Archive will form a legacy of learning material hosted within the institutional repository and library at University of Portsmouth. It will not only contain all the final finished artefacts but gathered data – evidences, found objects, films, notes and exercises – collected from visits to venues across the South East through the artist’s exchanges with a range of Deaf and disabled artists in partnership with project co-commissioner Accentuate.

Funders and Partners for Look About:

	British Geological Survey
For Look About Jon Adams will be working closely with lead geologists and map makers to create authentic artwork with a geological flavour, including a map and guide book printed by the BGS and the Ordinance Survey.

	ArtSway
Lead partner in developing and launching the Look About: Transmission element of Look About, providing the start and finish point of ‘transmission’ to other galleries and venues.

	University of Portsmouth
A cross-faculty exercise – including the Schools of Creative and Cultural Industries and Earth and Environmental Sciences – to create an ‘accessible’ and ‘internationally’ available archive within the Institutional repository and Library while establishing links between the University and external Cultural, Science and 2012 Olympic projects. This will be accompanied by talks/lectures involving staff and students.

	Dada South
Regular one-to-one meetings offering valuable contact time and support – frequently lacking amongst disabled and Deaf artists working in isolation – to enhance the capacity of the Look About project to streamline opportunities and challenges.

	Accentuate
Accentuate is the 2012 Legacy Programme for the south east. Inspired by the values and achievements of the Paralympics it consists of 15 ambitious projects that represent the arts, film, tourism, business, sport and heritage.

Jon Adams is lead Geologist to Look About and 'Geologist in Residence' to Accentuate.

Preview and Artist Talk
	Saturday 25 June 2011, 2pm - 5pm (Artist Talk: 3pm)
	FREE: All Welcome
Please join us to celebrate the launch of Mike Marshall's new ArtSway exhibition. The preview will also include a gallery talk by Mike Marshall, in conversation with Dan Howard-Birt (Assistant Curator, Stour Valley Arts) and Peter Bonnell (ArtSway Curator). Marshall will discuss the genesis of his jointly commissioned project with ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts, and his exploration of the two sites of the New Forest (home to ArtSway), and King's Wood (home to Stour Valley Arts).

For his exhibition at ArtSway Mike Marshall is exhibiting two new video works – It Rained and Controlled Burn – and a series of new photographic works from the project A Prism Splits Light. These works continue to develop Marshall’s investigation of conditions relating to thinking, sensing and activity. Here, this interest is pursued through contrasting notions of organic growth, fire, weather and seasonal change against the persistence of human endeavour and the desire for order and control. Mike Marshall’s new work is a co-commission between ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts, with support from the Barker-Mill Foundation.

	Open Space by Mike Marshall
Open Space, published by Stour Valley Arts in association with ArtSway, brings together a number of newly commissioned projects by Mike Marshall. This soft-cover, full-colour 96-page publication features texts by Chris Townsend and Robin Wilson and is available to purchase during the ArtSway exhibition.

Mike Marshall's ArtSway exhibition is a co-commission with Stour Valley Arts. Mike Marshall's commission is supported by the Barker-Mill Foundation.

New Work for ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts
Mike Marshall’s joint new commission for ArtSway and Stour Valley Arts will utilise video, sound and photography to investigate the ways in which we might interact with King’s Wood (where Stour Valley Arts are located) and the New Forest, and, at the same time, carefully scrutinise the ambient conditions of both locations. Marshall will use video to explore the ambient and climatic conditions of both forests over an extended period of time. Areas of study could include the refraction of light, movements of air and water, shifts of visual and sonic density and variations in weather conditions.
